Residential Schools Gesture of Reconciliation
In 5B we have been exploring interactions between First Peoples and the Europeans. A big part of that relationship is marked by the experiences of Residential Schools. Residential Schools were created by the Canadian Government and the Catholic Church in an effort to assimilate Indigenous children into the European way of living. The last Residential School closed in 1996. Since then, there have been and continue to be various movements of Resistance led by Indigenous Peoples in a fight for equality.
As a class, we decided to create “Gestures of Reconciliation”. Students wanted to show their empathy and support for the Indigenous communities of Canada and make a promise to be allies in the fight for reconciliation. Each gesture includes specific features that symbolize various aspects of Indigenous culture and ways that we can be allies in the fight for equality. In addition, each student was interviewed about what they know about Residential Schools, Reconciliation and their gesture.
