Inuit Culture & Sculpture
In 6A, we investigated how the Inuit people utilized natural resources to survive and flourish as a culture in the Arctic - one of the harshest extreme environments in the world. Students used critical thinking skills to craft a descriptive writing piece to demonstrate how the Inuit people lived sustainably.
In addition, students had the opportunity to carve an Arctic animal (Polar Bear, Arctic Wolf, Inuit Dog, Hawk, Seal or Orca) out of soapstone. They used the same techniques and materials that Inuit artists have relied upon for generations. By using their tools and space safely, students demonstrated the core competency of personal responsibility.
Finally, students used the core competency of communication to share interesting facts about their chosen animal and how it impacted Inuit traditions. Students recorded a podcast with Inuit music in the background as a way to pay tribute to the rich culture of the Indigenous Peoples in the Canadian Arctic.
