Kindergarten & Grade 1
Kindergarten and Grade 1 students had the opportunity to explore Pow Wow celebrations and used the Indigenous talking stick tradition and drawing to reflect and communicate what they saw and heard. We also discussed the significance of the drum in the Indigenous culture and in the spirit of a Pow Wow, the classes moved and showcased the beat on the drum to Indigenous singers such as Buffy Sainte-Marie and Susan Aglukark.
Grade 2 & Grade 3
Grade 2 and Grade 3 were inspired by the Indigenous People’s resourcefulness and their strong connection with nature. Students used their creative and critical thinking to create musical shaker instruments adorned with decorations to respect the materials used.
Grade 4 & Grade 5
Grade 4 and Grade 5 had the opportunity to learn about a variety of Indigenous singers in Canada. After reflection of their chosen singer's background, song lyrics and their connection to themes of Reconciliation, students shared their thoughts as a group and provided instrumental accompaniment.
Grade 6 & Grade 7
Grade 6 and Grade 7 explored Earth Songs; a set of songs composed in 2007 by the Coast Salish Indigenous People and a group of education students at the University of Victoria. These songs were gifted for students and teachers to use and share. Students honoured these songs by recording themselves individually singing at home and then using Garageband on school ipads to merge their tracks together.
